United States: Biden Administration Plans to Remake the Supreme Court

The U.S. president has just created a Commission to examine several proposals for remaking the Supreme Court. The opposition sees it as an artifice of the Progressive Democrats to undermine the conservative majority in the court.
A new Commission has just been created by Joe Biden, headed by a pair of top legal experts: Christina Rodriguez, professor of law at prestigious Yale University; and Bob Bauer, former White House legal adviser.
Democrat Biden had previously raised the possibility of convening a commission to remake the Supreme Court during the last election campaign.
This followed the appointment of conservative Catholic Amy Coney Barrett by former President Donald Trump, to replace the very liberal Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who died on September 18.
Calls were then made in progressive circles to increase the number of Supreme Court justices so that a Democratic president could appoint additional judges, to balance conservative domination.
The Commission, which has 36 members including two Catholics, has 180 days to examine the reform proposals: the number of judges making up the Supreme Court, the way in which senior magistrates are selected, the length of their mandate, and more broadly, the evolution of the role of the Court in the constitutional system.
President Biden remains unclear regarding his intentions, saying he is not in favor - in a personal capacity - of an increase in the number of supreme court judges.
The leader of the Republican minority in the Senate, Mitch McConnell, for his part, is calling it a “direct attack on the independence of the judicial system of our country.” Mr. Biden's commission, he added, is another sign of the influence of the far left in his administration.
